Why does the under performing management team continue to exist?
Senior managers often work in “silos” and work towards “silo” goals and objectives rather than organisation goals and objectives.
It is not unusual for there to be confusion about who is even on the team!
There is poor or non-existent understanding of what a high performing team looks like.
Do you want a high performing management team?
If you want a high performing management team you must deal with all of the items impacting on management team performance: team membership, team purpose, how team members work together, individual performance and accountability. You need a systemic approach to drive the performance of your management team.
The performance of any one individual on the team is an important but small part of team performance and so individual or executive coaching will not be sufficient to address team performance because the perspective is too narrow and sometimes biased.
Look at the difference a real team can make: Europe won the Ryder Cup (again) in 2014 beating team USA resoundingly. On paper this should not happen. Official world golf rankings put the average European player at 20th in the world but the average US player at 16th in the world. Team USA should have won but Team Europe has a real high performing team at work. The American players are brilliant individual golfers but the Europeans have a real team – it’s no contest.
